Asbestos
What is it- Asbestos
Asbestos is a natural mineral composed of flexible fibres resistant to heat, electricity and corrosion. These qualities make the material invaluable in many uses but they also make exposure dangerous. Asbestos has been widely used in construction as an effective insulator and can be added to fabric, paper, concrete, plastic and other materials to make them more durable. But when asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, the fibres can become permanently trapped in the body. Over decades, trapped asbestos fibres can cause inflammation, scarring and ultimately genetic damage. Consumers may wonder how dangerous asbestos is. Unfortunately, exposure to asbestos can cause cancer and other health problems. A rare and aggressive cancer called mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos also causes a progressive lung disease called asbestosis.
